Mulvane Old Settler’s Photography Competition

Sponsored by Emprise Bank and the Mulvane Chamber of Commerce

Eligibility for Mulvane Old Setter’s Photography contest:

The Contest is offered to intermediate and amateur photographers of any age working in all forms of photographic media – black and white or color.  By entering, you agree to the following official rules and the decisions of the Mulvane Old Settler’s Photography Competition Committee, which are final and binding in all respects.
Any local residents and those living in the vicinity are welcome to participate. Participants must be legal US citizens.  Employees of Emprise Bank and any members of their immediate family are ineligible to win. 

CameraFour Entry Categories are as follows:
(Ages as of August 1st.)

  • Ages 12yr and Under

  • Ages 13yr – 18yr

  • Ages 18yr+

  • The Spirit of Mulvane - Entries must be related to the City of Mulvane, represent an aspect of the community, or
    embody the overall spirit of the City of Mulvane.   (All ages eligible)


  • A limit of three entries per participant.  All other entries are disqualified.

  • Contestants under the age of 18 are required to have a legal guardian at the time of entry and the prize pick-up.

  • All photos MUST be at least 5x7.  Matting is not required, but encouraged. 

  • By submitting your photo, you acknowledge that the photo is your own work and that you have the full rights to submit the photo for the contest.  By submitting your photo, you grant the Mulvane Old Settler’s committee access to print or include the photo in print and non-print products.

  • Submissions will be accepted from June 1st through August 7th.  Submissions will be accepted at Emprise Bank, 1840 N. Rock Rd, during normal business hours.  Deadline for submissions is 5pm on August 7, 2017.

  • A total of $340 will be awarded in cash prizes as follows for each category:  1st place - $50, 2nd place - $25, 3rd place - $10. 

  • All prizes must be claimed by Oct. 20th.  To claim prizes, winner and/or their guardian must present identification. If winner does not come forward to claim prize, the Mulvane Old Settler’s Committee reserves the right to select an alternate winner or to not award that prize, in its sole discretion.

  • Submitted photos will be on public display at PIX Community Center, 101 E. Main St., for the duration of Mulvane Old Setter’s Days.  Photos are not to be picked up prior to Monday, Aug. 21st.  Winning photos will be on display at Emprise Bank for one month following Mulvane Old Settler’s Days.  All photos can be picked up at Emprise Bank.  Any photos not picked up within 60 days of the Old Settler’s Festival will become property of Emprise Bank.   

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges based on scoring in the criteria listed below.  Winners need not be present to win.  Winners and/or their legal guardians will be notified by phone or email listed on the entry form, and will be given instructions on how to claim their prize. 

Limitation of Liability:

  • Mulvane Old Setter’s Committee or staff is not responsible for any printing or typographical errors contained in any document related to this contest.

  • Mulvane Old Settler’s Committee or staff reserved the right, at its sole discretion, to suspend or cancel this contest for any reason beyond its control that could influence the impartiality or normal operation of this contest.

  • Mulvane Old Settler’s Committee or staff also reserves the right, at its discretion, to disqualify any entry and/or photograph that fails to comply with contest regulations, or for any reasonable cause.  All judges decisions are final.  Violation of any contest rules or fraudulent representation is prohibited and will result in immediate disqualification. 

  • Mulvane Old Setter’s Committee or staff will take every necessary precaution in handling the photographs that are submitted.  However, by entering, participants agree that Emprise Bank, the Mulvane Chamber of Commerce and the Mulvane Old Settler’s Committee are not liable for any damages or loss.

  • Participants waive any and all claims of liability against Emprise Bank, the Mulvane Chamber of Commerce, and the Mulvane Old Settler’s Committee for any personal injury or loss, which may occur from participating in the contest, or from use of any prize. 

  • Each winner and/or their guardian will be responsible for reporting any winnings and paying any taxes or expenses incurred by their prize. 

  • No purchase necessary and a purchase will not improve an individual’s chances of winning.  Void where prohibited by law.  Odds of winning dependent on number of entrants.

Photographs Will Be Scored According to the Following Criteria:


  • Focus – Is the image clear and sharp?  Does the photo record fine detail with good definition?

  • Grain – Is graininess apparent and detracting to the overall image?

  • Color – Is the color (either black and white or color) natural and true to life?  Does the photo have richness of color or a complete range of tones?


  • Lighting – Does the lighting call attention to the subject, set a mood, or add interest?

  • Contrast – Is contrast used effectively to make the subject stand out or to set a mood?

  • Exposure – Did the exposure used provide adequate lighting for the image?


  • Subject Placement – Is the subject placed in a position that adds to the interest of the picture?

  • Rule of Thirds / Converging Lines – Does the subject use the Rule of Thirds?  Is the picture well balanced or does it add an interesting perspective?

  • Perspective – Is the camera angle used effectively to add interest?

  • Foreground / Background – Is the foreground and background simple and uncluttered?  Is it used to set the stage without detracting from the subject?

  • Line, Shape, Pattern, Texture – Is line, shape, pattern or texture used to add interest or direct the eye to the subject?  Do the shapes and lines relate to one another?


  • Impact – Does the photo attract and maintain your attention?

  • Originality – is the subject presented in a unique way?
